MEET RENATA — THE HEART BEHIND BIMBOM HANDMADE

Behind Bimbom lies one generous and kind-hearted artist whose creations seem to carry a piece of her soul : Renata. Her journey into the world of handmade bunnies began not as a business venture, but as an act of love. She first started sewing these sweet companions for her own grandchildren, pouring into each stitch the warmth of her affection.

Upon retiring, and with the gentle encouragement of her daughters Eva and Dorota, she decided to share her passion more widely. What began at her home sewing table grew into a brand dedicated to spreading joy and sparking imagination for children across the globe.

The name “Bimbom” itself carries a charming family story. The very first time her granddaughters Léna and Emma laid eyes on the bunnies, they exclaimed with delight, “Wow, Granny, they look like bimbom!” Their little hands had found the soft pom-poms on the bunnies’ hats irresistible to touch and in that moment, the brand’s name was born. 

Today, that playful spirit remains stitched into every bunny Renata creates. 

THE CREATIVE PROCESS

From Fabric to Friend: How Each Bimbom Bunny Comes to Life

Could you describe the step-by-step process of making a bunny?

The creative process begins within my mind. My starting point is often a color, texture, or theme which inspires my imagination and awakens my creativity. 

I then decide on the shape of the bunny (what size, which body type) followed by the fabric selection and accessories.

Only once all my supplies have been gathered do I dive into the actual production which starts with a sample.

Approximately how long does it take to create one outfit?

I devote many hours to ensuring that each rabbit becomes not just an idea in my head, but a beautiful collector's item. It takes about 8-12 hours to sew a rabbit. 

Precise details in the clothing, additional embroidery, and other embellishments require the greatest focus and patience. And of course the packaging.

I also spend a vast amount of time designing new clothing patterns.

How do you choose the fabrics and materials?

I personally carefully select high-quality fabrics. I look for vintage fabrics and use those from my studio which I have collected over the years. I am drawn towards natural fabrics such as linen, cotton, silk, cashmere, wool…. I am also very fond of antique lace which I love to hunt for at French flea markets.

Could you describe your studio? 

My studio is located in the attic of my house with a wonderful view upon my large garden blooming with lavender, roses, and hydrangeas. 

On the shelves, there are boxes filled with beads, sequins, pearls, ribbons, pom-poms, tassels, and lots of fabrics. In spite of apparent chaos, I feel very much at peace. 

This place is more than just a workshop : it is a sanctuary where my hands and heart work together. Here time flows differently : slower, calmer.

 

How did you learn? Can you tell us about your creative background?  

From an early age, creating has been an integral part of my life. I am self-taught in sewing, embroidery, crocheting, and knitting. I learnt mainly by watching my mum.

Where do you find inspiration?

I draw inspiration from nature and fairy-tale stories. I frequently visit museums, exhibitions, art galleries, and antique fairs. I model my work on antique toys and rag dolls. I am inspired by Polish folk art and folklore.

How does it feel to create and what emotions would you like to convey?

Creating is essential for my well-being. I feel happy and grateful to be able to express my passion. My wish is to transfer this immense creative joy into my textiles. I would like my handmade bunnies to be more than just toys, to become companions of childhood, confidants of secrets, and precious keepsakes passed down from generation to generation.

I want the softness of these natural materials to evoke a sense of security. I would also like to develop children's imagination and respect for the tradition of craftsmanship. 

In today’s digital age and mass production culture, why do you think handmade items hold special value?

In the age of mass production, we long all the more for what is authentic, unique, and created with heart. Craftsmanship is gaining awareness and recognition in the world of childhood. 

A handmade bunny will never be identical. EVERY detail : clothing, embroidery, etc is created with my personal involvement. This makes each bunny one of a kind. Factory dolls are created in a soulless process, my hand-sewn ones have something more : emotion. 

Unlike plastic toys, they do not contribute to waste overproduction and do not harm the environment. Choosing handmade items is a conscious and ethical choice.. It is also a way to preserve traditions and skills that may otherwise disappear.
