CAPTURING TIMELESS CHILDHOOD IN HEIRLOOM CLOTHING : THE MISSION OF A MEMORY KEEPER
In a world where childhood memories often exist only as digital files, Dreama Spence stands as a guardian of something more permanent. Based in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, this heirloom portrait photographer believes that the fleeting magic of childhood deserves to be preserved as tangible, lasting art. Her mission is that of a memory keeper.

Her commitment extends to every detail of the portrait experience. This includes her carefully curated wardrobe of handmade children's clothing allowing families to select the perfect outfit. Dedicated to ensuring each piece meets her exacting standards for timeless elegance, she first acquired our White Heirloom Cerise Tiara dress.

Featuring a classic Peter Pan collar trimmed with frills, delicately puffed short sleeves with piping, elegant fabric-covered button fastening, and a charming butterfly wing sash that ties gracefully at the back, this design is distinguished by its intricate hand-smocked tiara pattern across the bodice. The tone-on-tone embroidery offers subtle sophistication that elevates this classic design to an exceptional keepsake garment.

Wishing to offer the same quality to little boys and to those dreaming of coordinated sibling looks, she challenged us to create a white smocked bubble to add to her studio collection. The White Heirloom Bubble was thus born.

Crafted with the timeless artistry of smocking traditions, this enchanting white romper embodies pure elegance for little gentlemen. Each delicate stitch tells a story of heritage craftsmanship, creating an heirloom treasure. The heart of this exquisite piece lies in its hand-smocked bodice, where intricate french knots dance across a diamond pattern. This traditional technique, passed down within our own team, creates a masterpiece.

Made from high quality cotton with a subtle textured weave, this outfit catches light beautifully in portraits and photographs. This fine fabric ensures breathability and comfort against delicate skin. It is intended for countless wears and careful preservation for future generations.

My Photography Journey

Can you please tell us what led you photography?
Two profound experiences shaped my path and ignited my passion for photography: losing my father as a little girl and becoming a mother for the first time.
Loss taught me early on how fleeting life can be. It gave me a deep appreciation for the people and places I hold dear. From a young age, I became a memory-keeper—a role I embraced long before I ever held a camera with intention.
Years later, I went to college to study Graphic Design, where I was required to take Photography 101. I still remember the first time I truly made a photograph—how the creative process of composing and capturing an image felt like a natural extension of my love for storytelling and beauty. That class planted a seed that would quietly grow over time.
After graduating, I worked professionally as a graphic designer at Howell Creative Group in Williamsburg, Virginia. I loved crafting visuals that told stories with elegance and purpose—but it wasn’t until I became a mother that photography called me back in a deeper way.
When Caroline was born, I made the decision to stay home. It was during those early years of motherhood that my passion for photography blossomed into a business. Reflecting on my own childhood—where only one photo remains from the years my mother was raising my sister and me—I felt an aching need to ensure that my children, Colby and Caroline, would have more. That they would grow up surrounded by tangible reminders of how deeply they were loved.

Picking up my camera became more than documentation—it became an act of devotion. Of belonging. Of preserving the magic and fleeting beauty of childhood not just for my family, but for every family I serve.
Today, my work is rooted in everything I believe matters most: connection, tradition, and the quiet, immeasurable worth of family. Heirloom portraits are more than images—they’re handcrafted pieces of art that honor the sacredness of motherhood and the legacy we leave behind.

Magic Behind the Scene
Can you please describe a photography session?
A Signature Heirloom Photography session typically begins with an inquiry two to three months in advance. Sessions may take place in my Williamsburg studio or through hosted private events in the comfort of your home or a thoughtfully selected local venue.
Once your session is on my calendar we’ll have a consultation where I get to know your child—their unique personality, cherished items, and your vision for these heirloom portraits. We’ll also discuss any handmade heirloom outfits, silver rattles, beloved lovies, or other meaningful family treasures you’d like to incorporate into the lifestyle portion of the session.
During the session I encourage moms to take a moment to pause and marvel at their child’s magic—their laughter, their wonder, their growing spirit. Sit back, breathe it all in, and let me preserve this fleeting chapter of your little ones story with care and artistry.
Finally, my clients will enjoy a beautiful slideshow of their child’s portraits, followed by a collaborative design session to create heirloom albums or custom art pieces. These portraits are meant to be more than files—they’re timeless treasures, lovingly displayed to honor each family’s story for generations.

The Art of Heirloom Styling: Curating Timeless Wardrobes
Your wardrobe is a unique concept and makes you stand out. Can you tell us about it?
In a world of fleeting trends and fast fashion, I’ve always been drawn to the enduring charm of timeless, handcrafted children’s clothing. It’s why styling is such an integral part of my Heirloom Portrait experience—not just as a convenience, but as a way to help families create portraits that feel truly lasting.
Each Signature Heirloom Session includes access to my carefully curated client wardrobe, a collection of exquisite children’s garments chosen for their classic silhouettes, heirloom-quality fabrics, and delicate craftsmanship. From hand-smocked dresses to sweet bubbles with Peter Pan collars, these pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia and reverence that pairs beautifully with the refined aesthetic of my portraits.
Brands like Charlotte Sy Dimby, Strasburg Children, Feltman Brothers, Elizabeth Layne, and The Beaufort Bonnet Company are represented in my collection—each selected for their dedication to quality and timeless design. I prioritize natural fabrics, subtle textures, and the kinds of fine details—like pintucks, embroidery, and lace trim—that echo a sense of childhood innocence and Southern grace.
My wardrobe includes a range of sizes for boys and girls, typically from 12 months to around size 6, and while I often recommend white or soft pastels to preserve that timeless look, I also have delicate florals and blush tones that photograph beautifully. Moms are always welcome to bring a treasured piece from home if they prefer—but I’m here to help either way. If you're unsure what will look best, I’ll guide you through outfit selection during our planning conversation, including how it will harmonize with your home décor and framing preferences.
When I first discovered Charlotte Sy Dimby, I was captivated by how her dresses married old-world charm with museum-worthy craftsmanship. The Cerise dress was the first piece I added to my collection, and the moment I held it in my hands, I knew her work would be a cornerstone of my wardrobe. That experience led me to commission a custom bubble from her atelier for boys—because every child deserves to be celebrated in clothing as special as they are.
These garments are more than just wardrobe—they are part of the narrative. They become woven into your child’s legacy and help tell a visual story full of sweetness, softness, and permanence.
